Based on the Charles Dickens book, the movie Great Expectations follows the story of Pip, an impoverished orphan boy who is requested to become the playmate of Estella, the young & wealthy adopted daughter of Miss Havisham a jilted recluse. Instantly falling in love with her, Pip and Estella soon part ways, only to re-meet as young adults where all Pip dreams of is becoming a Gentleman to win her heart. Luckily as fate would have it, he suddenly receives a great fortune from a nameless benefactor, a benefactor with ‘great expectations’.

A fantastic, morally complex story, the film highlights how wealth and possessions do not change who you are inside. Yes some things in life are caused by forces beyond our control but the film show us how through fathers taking pleasure in their children, kindness, trust, forgiveness and real friendship, healing and restoration can occur.

On the down side, a complex web of fate and irony sees the lives of these intertwined orphans exploited as false hopes, thwarted vanities and the mysterious workings of sowing and reaping determines their every step. Along with that insults, threats, graphic violence and some drunkenness dirty the mix.
So only recommend for older teens and up, Vision Radio is giving this literacy classic 3.5 burning candles out of 5 for family friendliness.
