Fallen digger returning home

The body of Australian Sergeant Blaine Diddams is on its way home from Afghanistan, after the fallen digger was farewelled by colleagues in Tarin Kowt.

Sergeant Diddams was killed in a firefight on Tuesday while on the hunt for an insurgent.

His patrol had been dropped-in by helicopter in pursuit of the insurgent.

The trooper was shot in the chest, and despite wearing combat body armour he died at a medical facility in Tarin Kowt.

An Australian Special Operations Task Group commander says the husband and father would be forever missed; but never forgotten.

Accused murderer denied bail

Gerard Baden-Clay was denied bail today after the Brisbane SupremeCourt heard that the blood of his wife, Allison Baden-Clay, was found in the family car.
Crown Prosecutor Danny Boyle says the blood was found in a position consistent with the back seat of the car being laid down to create a larger boot space.
The court heard an examination of Mrs Baden-Clay's body revealed no external injuries, other than a chip to one of her teeth.
Mr Baden-Clay has been charged with murdering his wife and interfering with her body.

Australian media landscape changes

Australia's media landscape has been rocked for a second time this week with News Limited announcing a massive restructuring of the way it delivers news.
The announcement, which includes job cuts and a reduction in east coast operations from 19 divisions to five, comes days after Fairfax outlined plans to axe 1,900 staff, close two major printing presses and downsize its flagship newspapers to tabloids.

Despite the cuts, News Limited CEO Kim Williams has told staff that the organisation remains committed to print, as it looks to other acquisitions.

Chaplaincy program not in jeopardy

Queensland’s largest employing authority for school chaplains will ask the Federal Government to act quickly to ensure funding for school chaplains is protected.
The High Court of Australia yesterday ruled the Federal Government’s direct funding model is not valid.
Scripture Union QLD Incoming CEO Peter James told UCB that although the historical funding model does not work, the court unanimously held there is no problem of “church – state” separation from chaplaincy and that the verdict is not all bad news when it comes to the position of christian chaplains in state schools.
