A fashion debate?
Tuesday, 17 May 2011 10:22
If you listened to Night Vision on Tuesday night and thought I was a bit blunt...I make no apology. I trust you were not offended.
There are things happening around us about which we (as Christians) should be making a stand.
As a Christian radio presenter...I cannot but tell.
Late last week, on a national TV morning show, an editor of a 'teens fashion magazine' expressed concern at some of the clothing styles being foisted upon 'teens & tweens' by certain unscrupuolous clothing companies.
Recently these styles, clearly designed to sexualize young girls in the same manner as they have young women, have seen a huge boost by the aligning themselves with the 'slutty fashion' trend.
The appearance of fashion-shop windows, embalzoned with huge 'SEX' posters/murals which promote overtly revealing and provocative clothing-cuts and style has brought mixed reactions in the community. Some have been removed, others 'modified' (by overlaying 'censored' banners) in a manner to draw extra attention to their unseen message.
By 'skilfull' cutting and shaping of clothing, more of the female body is being revealed...cut-off shorts reveal more buttock; sleveless-blouses, with lowered and loose armpits, reveal more breast; lowered waistbands on jeans/slacks, combined with shorter tops reveal the 'cleft' on a lower back (too often adorned with a tattoo); plunging or loose necklines reveal more cleavage, when combinedd with latest bra-cut styles...all designed to create an image of overt sexuality.
Through hundreds of websites, now blossoming in the internet, the message for young women is to boost their 'sex-esteem', flaunt their 'assets' and enjoy the liberation this brings.
Meanwhile, due to the pressure of advertising in 'teens & tweens' magazines, images on TV and film...not to mention peer pressure...mothers are caving in and allowing their young daughters to dress in styles designed for objectifying and sexualizing them at ever-decreasing ages.
Recently, the media featured child-models who are having their faces injected with botox, to erase the natural lines when they smile, during modelling events.
Our sister station in the Uk, UCB Radio, recently hosted a facebook forum based upon this news report out of Canada...
A policeman in Canada recently told a group of school kids that if girls dress in a sexually provocative way they get what they deserve. This has prompted women all over the world to join scantily clad marches saying women should be able to dress how they want & still be treated with respect.
We're asking if it’s as simple as that & what message does the provocative way many celebrities dress send to young girls?
The online response to this was quite amazing...as this small cross-section demonstrates:
IAN said: ...A woman should be allowed to wear what she likes without a man thinking bad thoughts or doing bad things...
CLARE said: ...The amount of judgement being bandied around on this by (I assume) Christian believers is shocking. - we have been taught to be compassionate and non-judgemental...
HEATHER said:... Unfortunately fashion is huge these days & gone to levels that are unhealthy, even girls under 10 are dressing older than they are because trendy clothing has become a normal way of life! Parents can help by showing responsibility & wisdom in how to dress...the celebrity world will always have a certain negative effect on how to dress, us parents need to take first responsibility, to pray & educate!
CAROLINE said:.. They are encouraging men to think of them as pieces of meat and sex objects. Our Western culture condones women dressing whatever way they like but I don't think it's right - it's all about them drawing attention to themselves and they are actually cheapening themselves in the process. The Bible tells women to dress modestly and not to dress like prostitutes. There is a campaign going on 'Mumsnet' *at the moment which is encouraging retailers not to stock certain clothes which over sexualise young girls and children. It's called "Let girls be girls"* I fully support that and I would not buy certain items of clothing for my 7 year old daughter because I want to raise her to value her body and save it for her husband...
*Let Girls be Girls campaignSARAH said:... assault and worse is NEVER right and cannot be excused. However I also agree that girls do parade themselves in ways which attract attention and then complain about it. It is about standards and not putting everything out on show...
Plenty of points of view...and then some (62 altogether)!
Sadly, this and other related issues will continue to go on as long as big business has it's way and governments fail to make any moral stand...but, where are the Christians, Christian leaders, Churches-at large when it comes to this???Unfortunately...the matter is exasserbated by the fact that this has crept into our church services and... as there is little or no initiative taken in the area of modesty on behalf of the wearers of 'trend' clothes (both male and female), even less effort by leaders to teach on this subject and definitely no scripture-based discipline in the church...the church stands compromised!
Why no stand on these issues? - Because we don't want to offend...be seen to be rigid, inflexible or judgemental...drive people away from our doors..or - worse yet - be judged as politically incorrect!
The late David Wilkerson, not long before he passed away expressed his distress at the condition of the church when he stated "There's more of the world in the church, than there is Church in the world!"
The subject of provocative dress in a House of Worship should not even be an issue! Our attendance is to worship God and not to lure others into worshipping us. A dress-code is accepted in many parts of society in general...how much more should it be so in the House of God?
Without even getting into the issues of the distraction from worship for others around us...it does not take too much thought to find what's right and take a stand.
[For the record, my own contribution to the forum was: Saddest thing is that these fashions are appearing in church! The whole issue of 'slutty' fashion gives rise to hundreds of websites and, worse still, is headlined in 'teen & tween' magazines for girls and our kids - even in Christian households - are falling for it. Scripture is quite clear on the need for ALL (m/f) to be modest in dress and behaviour and to abstain from all that leads to...or even suggests...evil. Sadly, Keith's observations are written like a true male ostrich! The males - heads of households, guardians of society and faith - are turning the other way, tacitly giving their approval to all this overt sexuality. That's why the 'SEXY' and 'SLUTTY' brands of clothing are gaining such free access to the markets. Where are the men who will stand up and be counted instead of just running for cover?]
Remember, no matter what happens, God is still in control so KEEP LOOKIN'UP!
Phil
