A US TV news director and presenter has been sacked because she collected signatures for a pro-life initiative at her church.

The initiative seeks to outlaw abortion in some Nebraska towns.

Melanie Standiford was told her actions violated the company’s policy on journalistic impartiality and raised questions about her ability to cover the abortion issue without bias.

She says the company had never found fault with her reporting on the topic.

The TV station said it encouraged civic involvement by employees but not political campaigning on any issue.

Ms. Standiford claimed her employer was not clear that the policy extended to gathering signatures from “like-minded Christians.”

She did not report on her efforts to gather signatures for the initiative.

The Christian Post reports the former regional news boss is considering legal action, arguing she has the right to uphold her values outside the workplace.
